Sunja's Space:

~April 19, 2010

So, a few of you responded on the forums as to what you'd like to see in my blogs and the most popular thing on the list? Cats.

You get what you wish for! I'll be incorporating a lot more cat stories in my blogs from now on, while also talking more about Scog and Tamasuade.

So, to celebrate this new direction I thought I'd start off with a bit of a rant. A rant on something many people are calling, "furries."

If you don't know what a furry is, they're basically people who dress up and behave like animals. Cats. Dogs. Whatever. A lot of them are thought of to be dressed in outfits reminiscent of a mascot costume...and while at first that doesn't seem altogether SO crazy, I beg differently. Another big part of this "furry" trend actually extends into adult play. Though I don't think it HAS to be this way, it is certainly the connotation.

In any case, I am going to rant about furries because I just got back from LARPing this past weekend. At NERO I role play as a cat person...and it got me worrying: am I furry because I play a cat in a LARP? Personally, I would rather not have that label...as I do not dress up like a cat on a regular basis, nor does it extend into anything more than a weekend long imagination fest. Essentially, these furries believe they are these animals. Honestly? It kind of creeps me out.

Which brings me to the fact that these connotations and stereotypes of furries have made my experience role playing as a cat person and even working on this webcomic a tad awkward. I find myself concerned that I am sending off a vibe to people here at college that I am one of them...and currently on my college campus there are excessive rumors about there being several furries who have been caught "messing around" in the woods at night.

I'm already a rather strict prude when it comes to anything intercourse related...so I admit the idea makes me uncomfortable. That's basically why I worry that I could potentially be grouped into this furry club. Still, I suppose I am being a bit mean. There is some merit to being different and having the guts to do something people will look down upon--and I feel like a few of them who have told others they are furries is somewhat similar the idea of "coming out."

Ah well. Whether or not this furry thing is right or wrong or whatever, I personally would rather not be labeled in that group.

After all, I don't want to BE a cat, I just find them extremely interesting. >^.^<
